Visual art is a creative expression of an artist’s environment. Recently I attended the recent exhibition of Hadaway and Ramkissoon at the Trinidad and Tobago Art Society gallery. The work of these two artists showed the evolution of media and its effect on the creativity of the artist.

Hadaway’s art pieces were done in the traditional media of acrylics; his style of painting was impressionistic where he captures the movement of the tassa drummer and the flight of the macaw parrot giving us glimpses of his environment. Colour and light are two elements which are characteristics of the impressionist movement of the late 1800’s. Hadaway’s creative use of acrylics is seen in his manipulation of the medium to communicate his message in his pieces. In the Tassa drummer his use of colour and bush strokes conveys the liveliness of the moment.

Ramkissoon combines photography with modern technology in that he uses computer programs to enhance his photographs. Some of the programs he uses are Lightroom and Photoshop. In this exhibition Ramkissoon’s subject matter is traditional since he is featuring the Magnificent 7 buildings from around the Queen’s Park Savannah. Ramkissoon’s creative use of his media is his manipulation of his images and the reflective canvases he prints on. The computer programs allow Ramkissoon to be creative with his portrayal of depth making the images of the houses sit comfortably amongst the surrounding foliage.

Creativity can be seen in an artist’s use of his medium as well as how he communicates his message to the public. Media development continues to evolve and facilitate the creative expression of artists.

  1. I used to cover the art scene for a while as a reporter, and I really enjoyed visiting the different galleries multiple times a week. This brings back those memories, and offers some insight. Good work so far.

    1. Thank you for your support, this blog has encouraged me to get back out there and visit the art galleries ......something I kept saying I did not have time for.... I am enjoying actual visits rather than viewing online artworks.
